What is it?
A full suspension bike refers to the bike having a front and back shock rather than only a front shock. This can also be called the rear shock. A bike that does not have a rear shock is typically called a hard tail due to the back of the bike not being able to handle as much pressure.
Why have it?
The reason I love having a full suspension bike is becasue it makes it easier to ride difficult trails. The rear shock on my bike makes it much easier to ride over roots and rocks rather than having a hard tail like my previous bike. The reason it makes it easier to ride roots and rocks is becasue it absorbes the pressure from the obsticales. Having a full suspension bike also makes jumping easier. When landing from a jump or a drop it's important to make sure you can absorbe the blow and in this case the rear shock is perfect for that.
Drawbacks:
Although there aren't many bad parts about having a full suspension bike it does have one drawback. If you mountain bike on a race team having a full suspension bike can somtimes slow you down due to the intense detail the rear shock puts on each obstical. On the other hand a hard tail bike will run over the roots without absoribing much at all. Lucky for racers with full suspension bikes, you can actually set your rear shock to hard tail mode which means it will stop absorbing obsticals in the back. If you look at the picture above the little blue nob determines what mode I am on. If I turn the nob to the far right I will be on full suspension. If I put the nob in the middle it is half suspension meaning it takes off half of the pressure. If I turn it to the far left it will be on hard tail mode.
Overview:
I personally think having a full suspension bike is worth it. It's super fun and can be really helpful on hard terrain. If you have any questions about getting a full suspension bike you can contact me on my page, or go to your local bike shop and ask them. The most important part to remember is to have fun!!
